Wates extends Isle of Wight college

1 hour Wates Group has started to build a new Welcome Hub at Isle of Wight College, under the Department for Education's £7bn schools construction framework.

The Welcome Hub will form a new entrance to the college.聽Spanning two storeys, the Hub will provide purpose-built vocational teaching spaces for disciplines including performing arts, hospitality, and travel and tourism.

Hospitality and the visitor economy are major priorities for the Isle of Wight, and the new building will directly support these sectors. It will feature industry-standard training kitchens, flexible hybrid learning spaces, and a training restaurant offering dining opportunities for external customers and the wider island community, giving students the opportunity to train in a real working environment.

Sustainability is central to the design, with green roofs, solar energy panels, rain gardens and sustainable drainage systems integrated throughout. Materials from the existing site will be reused wherever possible, reducing waste and environmental impact.

Mark Craig, regional managing director for construction, south, at Wates said,鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to deliver state-of-the-art educational facilities on the Isle of Wight, reinforcing our trusted partnership with the Department for Education and our commitment to creating inspiring spaces to empower young people.聽

鈥淭hrough this project, we鈥檙e focused on generating lasting social value, supporting local families, and building strong community relationships that endure long after the project is complete.鈥

Work has begun on site and will consist of a two-phased construction project. The project is due to be completed in 2028.
