McPhillips delivers green space in Kidderminster

5 days McPhillips has completed Talbot Park, a £4.3m green space and urban connectivity project forming part of the regeneration of Kidderminster's town centre.

Linking Worcester Street with Bromsgrove Street, Talbot Park has been delivered through investment from the Government鈥檚 Future High Streets Fund.聽Shropshire based McPhillips was principal contractor on the project - secured under an NEC4 Option A contract worth 拢4.23 million that began in September 2024.

Work involved replacing the former stepped access with a new landscaped community space. It incorporates a range of high-quality features including a dedicated play area, improved disabled access throughout the site, and new LED lighting to enhance safety and usability. Public realm enhancements include new paving, extensive landscaping, and the installation of street furniture.

McPhillips contracts manager Dan Redmond said, 鈥淭he project presented a number of technical, logistical and site-specific challenges that required careful planning, coordination and mitigation throughout the construction process.

鈥淭hese arose due to the constrained town centre location, legacy conditions from previous structures and the complexity of the proposed landscaping and infrastructure works.鈥

Challenges included complex ground conditions from prior demolitions, leaving buried complex blocks. The site is on a steep gradient, with deep drainage infrastructure. The slope exacerbated surface water management issues. Work needed to be conducted in a busy town centre, alongside the construction of a new National Gird substation.

The work was completed on programme and to budget.
